A Cuppa With...SPECTRASOUL

Posted in Interviews on Wednesday 26th August, 2009 by Nick Tearle

You may have noticed in the last year that Spectrasoul have been gaining momentum within the drum n bass scene, with releases on Shogun and signings to Renegade Recordings, Westbay International and Nu:Directions. They gained solid DJ support from the likes of Friction, Fabio, DJ Marky, Logistics and Commix and the coming months will see releases on some of the biggest labels in the business, with some exciting remix projects to look forward to as well. Bookings have come from far and wide, and in light of this we caught up with one half of the duo - Dave Kennett – before a Spectrasoul performance here at FABRICLIVE on Friday.

For those who aren’t familiar with you, can you sum up the noise you make?
170bpm soul-fuelled, future-proof, drum & bass music.

So Dave, when did it all start?
I’ve been involved in the D&B scene for the last 10 years in one form or another, and always had a passion for the more musical side and experimental sides of the genre.

When did you both meet and how did Spectrasoul come about?
We got introduced to each other at one of my events up in London in 2005, both being from Brighton we started swapping tracks, and eventually got into the studio together later that year. I guess it was that time when we realised the we had an instant working
relationship, everything clicked together and we made our first batch of tracks, two of which ended up being our debut release on SGN:LTD.

Is there anyone else on the scene you’ve been watching/following?
To be honest, not really. We’ve always just done our thing when it comes to producing music. I mean there’s lots of artists that we are
in close contact with, so I guess you clock what they’re up to via their music. Our main influences come from outside of the D&B scene, I
think that’s what helps keep ideas fresh, and experimental thoughts at the forefront.

What’re you most looking forward to in the next 6 months – releases, gigs…avian migrations?
We’ve got a lot going on at the moment, it’s an exciting time for both of us. I’m pretty hyped about our Metalheadz single, that’s a big
personal achievement for us both. We’ve just signed our album deal with Shogun Audio, so really looking forward to getting stuck into that.

Where do you see Spectrasoul in 5 years’ time?
Tough question, if I’d been asked that question 5 years ago, I’d have never thought we’d be doing what we do now. Hopefully we can continue
to progress, have a couple of albums under our belt, maybe a compilation mix cd of some sorts, and continue to gig all over the world.
